Louis Derry, Professor in Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, was elected a fellow of the Geological Society of America (GSA). GSA’s mission is to advance geoscience research and discovery while supporting the global community of geologists. The GSA Fellowship recognizes exceptional members of the geoscience community. Derry joined Cornell Earth and Atmospheric Sciences as a research fellow in 1994 and as a faculty member in 1996. Cornell Atkinson Center for Sustainability awarded a seed grant to an interdisciplinary project that reduces levels of air pollution in India from agricultural burning. The project is led by Natalie Mahowald and Peter Hess from the Cornell University College of Engineering, Andrew McDonald from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell University, and Prabhu Pingali from The Dyson School. Graduate Awards Meyer Bender ’29 and Stephen Bender ’58 Memorial Scholarship Paula Burgi The Meyer Bender ’29 and Stephen Bender ’58 Memorial Scholarship was established in 1981 by the Bender family in honor of Meyer Bender ’29, who graduated from our department and who was one of our most generous and innovative benefactors throughout his life. Monday, May 18 is the 40th anniversary of the massive eruption of Mount St. Helens volcano in Washington. This seminal event was the most destructive eruption in the US and gave birth to much of the modern science of volcanology.
